As much as I love long summer days, walks on the beach and warm temperatures; I also really enjoy the winter months. There are many reasons as to why Christmas is one of my favourite holidays, especially when I get to spend it in New York. When I was young, I always dreamt about spending the holidays in the city and I sometimes still can’t believe that I live here and have the opportunity to do just that. Let me tell you a few of the many reasons why NYC is the best place to be during Christmas.
“When I was young,
I always dreamt about spending the holidays in the city”
#1. Let it Snow!
When the nights become long and the temperatures drop so low it starts to snow, I love to spend time in my apartment. After a long day, I feel extremely content when I get to cozy up on the couch with a fuzzy blanket, a hot cup of tea, and a good book.
#2. Twinkly Lights Cover the City
One of the most beautiful things about this time of year is when the whole city is lit up with Christmas lights. The streets, trees and residential areas are typically decorated extensively with festive Christmas decorations. New York is usually grey during the winter months, but when it gets dark and the whole city lights up it truly is breathtaking.
#3. New York Christmas Market
From late November all through January you will find outdoor Christmas markets located throughout the city. I love to visit these markets because it’s a great opportunity to buy unique gifts and souvenirs. Even if I decide not to buy anything, there are many other things to do and see. Often times the market will have extensive food and beverage opportunities with all the delicious holiday snacks you can think of. It’s usually packed with people and the atmosphere is always cheerful. Often times there is even live entertainment including Christmas carols and parades, which I especially enjoy.
#4 Ice skating on Wollman Rink in Central Park
Ice skating in central park is almost a tradition in New York and its one of my favourite things to do during this time of the year. The Wollman rink has been featured in countless movies and has therefore become somewhat of a trademark. Both tourists and locals of all ages will pay a visit to skate on one of the city’s largest ice skating rinks during the winter months. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone who is in the area because for most it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.
#5 Winter Collections
I believe Winter is the best season when it comes to my wardrobe. Every year there are new collections, trends and ways to style them. The reason why I prefer Winter as opposed to any other season is because there is more opportunity and room for creativity due to the fact that there are more items of clothing involved to create one look. Winter collections typically have a great combination of comfortable fabrics and stylish design; I especially love a good oversized knit with a pair of leather boots and a long coat. Going on a shopping spree in New York during this time of the year is amazing due to the large amount of boutiques all over Manhattan and of course – the holiday atmosphere. However, for Christmas specifically I like to pull the little black dress out of my closet because its effortless, timeless, and elegant.
