One of my biggest insecurities about my appearance has always been my hair. I have a lot of it, although you might not be able to tell from the photos because it’s so fine, and it’s very straight. It won’t really hold curls, especially not when it’s humid or warm out. It doesn’t have a lot of volume unless I use loads of products which eventually will weigh my hair down.
“My hair doesn’t have a lot of volume.”
So over the past few years, I’ve been trying to figure out how to deal with it, to make it look as presentable as possible. I’ve tried many different products and devices, plus some other tricks. I’ll let you guys in on a “secret”, or basically something I’ve never shared before. Because, as I mentioned, my hair is something I can get quite insecure about. So I’ve tried hair extensions. For a couple of years… The really long hair I had? Not all mine. I mostly used it for volume, not length, but still. I thought it would make me feel better about myself, and I kind of did, for a while at least. I guess they were just means to an end – so I figured I’d take them out (about six months ago) and learn to love my hair just the way it is. Because there are many ways to make it look good, you just need to know the tricks. And in the end, everyone has bad hair days, right?
So that’s where the experts come in. Last week I had the pleasure of meeting hair genius Dominick Serna at the beautiful Mark Garrison salon, in collaboration with Women’s Rogaine. With years of experience under his belt, he taught me a few tips and tricks for maximizing volume with fine hair:
– There’s a fine line between the amounts of products your hair can take: too little and it won’t really do anything, too much and it will weigh your hair down. So calm down with the sea salt spray (my fave) and dry shampoo – balance is key.
– After styling your hair with a curling iron, don’t brush it out. Flip your hair all the way in front of your eyes, and just comb your hair through with your hands. Let the natural oils on your hands do the work!
– To create volume in fine hair it’s always fun to curl your hair, which is something I kind of knew and love doing – but it’s good to get that confirmation (I was on the right track!).
– Wash your hair every three days, less is more in this case.
– To create volume, products you use should concentrate on the top back of your head. If that part of your hair has volume, it already does half of the work for you!
And last but not least, my fave: short hair usually works better for super fine hair. The lift creates volume without having to touch it. Now, this is something I’ve experienced first hand when I cut my hair in November. It has so much more volume than it did before, even if I don’t really do anything with it. Amazing!
